Amazing properties of Shea Butter

Shea butter is an aromatic fat obtained from Karite tree seeds which occur naturally in the dry African savanna, from Senegal to Ethiopia. The tree begins to bear fruit only after 30-40 years. Therefore, there is very few plantations. Typically, Shea butter is extracted from wild plants.

It is widely used in Africa, not only as edible fats. It is used without admixtures as an ointment against stretch marks and in baby skin care, for massage of aching muscles and as a treatment for skin irritations. Shea butter is also a natural conditioner for dry, friable, split hair.

Why does your organism need amino-acid supplementation?

Diet supplementation will not replace our balanced diet, however it will enrich it with valuable nutrients which our food have lost.

Why does your organism need amino-acid supplementation?

Amino-acids are the building blocks of all proteins in our body. Substances which have physiological activities, crucial for proper function of our organism, are also formed from amino-acids. They have anabolic and anti-catabolic properties and they strongly stimulate our hormonal system. After physical exercises amino-acids accelerate muscle regeneration, and on certain occasions they become energetic materials. Some of them play an important role in fat tissue breakdown processes and also in strengthening our immune system.
COLVITA® is a dietary supplement introduced by Colway, which is a rich source of amino-acids, such as:

ColvitaGlycine – crucial for the growth hormone, it stimulates the production of red blood cells and keratin (which affects the condition and appearance of our skin). It also improves the condition of our muscles and plays a key role in the optimisation of bile acids production. Glycine also has anti-stress properties.

Proline – improves the condition of collagen and elastin fibres, ligaments, cartilage and cardiac muscle. It also speeds up the wound healing process and tissue regeneration.

Lysine – improves immune system, plays an important role in the formation of tissues, cartilage, hormones and enzymes, facilitates calcium absorption in bones and protects against viruses.

Alanine – regulates glucose metabolism in muscles.

Tyrosine – produces thyroid hormone, aids in pituitary and adrenal glands function; works as an antidepressant and supports the treatment of insomnia.

Arginine – widens blood vessels, stimulates tissue growth (including muscle tissue), increases the level of insulin and testosterone and strengthens our vital force.

Methionine – detoxifies blood during pregnancy, degreases liver and cleanses kidneys, helps in treatment of rheumatism and osteoporosis and lowers the level of bad cholesterol.

Glutamine – improves memory and concentration and supports our nervous system functions.

Histidine – is important in the process of red blood cells production and formation of muscle tissue, especially important as a nutritious ingredient of teenagers’ diet.

Kropla Zdrowia

I always look for natural, safe skincare products and now I had a chance to try a hand soap called Kropla Zdrowia – product of a new cosmetic line by a Polish company called Marmed Health Care.

Marmed Health Care is a partnership with 20 years experience in healthcare. They are based in Gorlice, Poland. Recently they have introduced a special cosmetic line called Kropla Zdrowia (eng.: A Drop of Health) which has three sub-lines:Kropla Zdrowia

  • Eco Gold Line
  • Ecological Line
  • Medical Line

The soap I have tried belongs to the Medical Line and it contains nanosilver and white kaolin clay. It is a product which doesn’t contain parabens, silicones, phtalates, mineral oils, oil derivatives, GMO products, artificial colouring or fragrances. It has been approved as a medical product of the Ist class in Poland.

This soap is recommended for use on the whole body. Thanks to its exceptional formula it reduces inflammations, revitalizes and regenerates the skin. It also has great soothing and mineralizing properties. The soap cleans the skin delicately, removes dead skin cells and closes pores. It also helps with atopic dermatitis, reduces sweating and excessive sebum production.

NANOSILVER – has great antibacterial, antifungal and antiseptic properties. It’s safe, non-toxic and it works like an antibiotic by killing over 650 pathogens. It destroys fungi, mould and parasites and it reduces inflammations and strengthens our natural immunity. It doesn’t cause mucus membrane irritation.

KAOLIN CLAY – is a 100% natural product. It restores proper pH of your skin, absorbs pollution and chemicals from epidermis, fights and eliminates epidermis bacteria, soothes acne and closes pores. It is rich in such minerals as: Silicon, Aluminium, Potassium, Iron, Magnesium, Sodium, Nitrogen, Manganese, Molybdenum, Selenium, Titanium, Calcium and more.

I had a chance to use kaolin clay before in Colway’s “Last Minute” Face Mask and I loved it! My skin feels great after Kropla Zdrowia’s liquid soap, leaving it clean and well moisturised. I used it on my whole body when having a shower and it worked great. Even though it contains some Sodium Laureth Sulfate (and a couple of other ingredients which I’m not happy with) my skin doesn’t feel dry after use. It is recommended for normal, oily and mixed type of skin.

It is available as a liquid soap (500ml) or as a bar of soap (100g). Price 19.20 PLN for a liquid soap and 13.40 PLN for a bar.

I’ll have to try the bar and check its ingredients – they are usually milder and safer in formula.

Squalane – for thirsty skin

Squalane is one of the most common lipids produced by human skin cells which makes about 10% of our sebum. It works as a natural barrier on our skin protecting it from moisture loss and from environmental toxins. Squalane is also produced by the liver as a precursor to cholesterol.

Squalane is a saturated and stable form of squalene which makes it more stable against oxidation when exposed to air. Squalane breaks down slower and has a longer life shell than squalene. It is currently considered one of the most exclusive components of cosmetics and can be found in lip balms, lipsticks, moisturisers, lotions, deodorants but also in dietary supplements. It penetrates the skin and absorbs quickly without leaving an unpleasant residue on the surface of the skin.

It has many beneficial properties:

  • antioxidant – it protects the skin’s lipid structures against oxidation and free radicals
  • great moisturiser – strengthens the skin’s natural lipid barrier and lightly oils
  • hypoallergenic
  • has soothing properties in minor skin injuries and inflammations
  • recommended for anti-wrinkle products for mature skin which has lost its natural squalene content
  • has antibacterial properties – can be used for treating the symptoms of eczema

There is many cosmetic products with this ingredient available on the market. It is also one of the active ingredients in Ultra-Moisturising Collagen Body Lotion (300ml) – one of the Cosmetic Line products by Colway. Squalane used in this product is obtained from the best quality olive oil. It is a perfect carrier for biologically active fat-soluble ingredients which enables a good penetration of the skin’s deeper layers, thanks to its affinity with the lipid structures of the epidermis. It is also considered an ingredient with low comedogenic properties (it does not block the pores).

Applying squalane will moisturise your skin and help you achieve a softer texture and smoother appearance. Regular use of products containing this ingredient can smooth scars, reduce wrinkles, reverse UV damage, lighten freckles and improve skin pigmentation while fighting free radicals. Goodbye dark circles and puffy eyes

Here we are with one of the most common concern of women (and men) – puffy eyes and dark circles. Some of us have had this problem since… always, others start complaining when they become older. Minor puffiness under your eyes is normal and it’s nothing to worry about. We often wake up with swollen eyes in the morning. This is usually caused by gravity and the redistribution of fluid in the horizontal position. You might try putting an extra pillow under your head in such case.

If the problem increases though it might cause concern so let’s try to find out why it happens and how to deal with it.

There is many factors which may cause puffiness around your eyes, such as:

  • ageing – as we grow older the skin around our eyes becomes thinner, its muscles weaken and it loses its elasticity; as a result it may become swollen or start drooping
  • water accumulation (edema) – can be caused by poor lymphatic circulation and increased capillary permeability
  • diet – salt encourages fluid retention and may cause swelling, so avoid too salty food and do exercises which helps to remove salt through sweat
  • oversleeping / sleep deprivation – too much sleep or disturbed, irregular sleep; first is related to fluid retention, the second to tiredness; also remember – never sleep with your make-up on as it irritates the delicate skin around your eyes
  • alcohol and tobacco use – they contain toxins which may lead to stress, fatigue and hormonal changes, which also affect the condition of our skin
  • allergies – cause leaks in the subcutaneous capillary beds which gives us red and swollen eyes in return
  • crying and rubbing your eyes too often
  • thyroid or kidney problems – which should always be examined by a specialist and would require medical treatments

Dark circles are often caused by capillaries or pigmentation in the skin. It might be something you’ve inherited or they’ve been created by a loss of volume in the area around the eye (with age the skin is thinning and exposing the the tiny blood vessels that lie just below).

What to do?

Most of the time it’s enough to keep a good diet, avoid drinking and smoking, do exercises, avoid stress and have a regular sleep routine. Just be good to yourself. To bring your skin back to its normal condition, it might also help to use good cosmetics or try some natural treatments (cucumber slices, chamomile or green tea bags, halves of raw potato or iced water… – you can find more here: 10 tips to get rid of under eye puffiness). Make sure you keep your delicate skin moisturised and apply sunscreen when you go out.

If you’re looking for a good eye cream, probably one of the best cosmetic ingredient which fights this problem is Eyeseryl®. It is a bioactive tetrapeptide which has strong anti-swelling properties and reduces dark circles and puffiness of your eyes area by 95% (according to American tests). According to some sources it can reduce puffy eyes in as little as 15 days. It also supports microcirculation, lightens dark circles, smooths eye wrinkles and rejuvenates the look.

Some products with Eyeseryl® include:

SLS soaps in toothpastes

SLS soaps are also a common ingredient in most of the toothpastes, even in toothpastes for children. They are there to create a foaming action.

Research shows that those can be linked to two things:

  • canker sores (mouth ulcers)
  • bad breath

Canker sores can be quite a nuisance, we usually get them when we bite or injure the inside of our mouth with hard food like freshly baked roll. SLS is a chemical that creates a microscopic damage to the oral tissue of our mouth, which triggers canker sores.

We do not really need SLS in the toothpaste, there are other ingredients, non-irritant, which can be used instead. Besides to clean well we don’t really need lots of foam. Instead soap may leave you with a feeling of dryness in your mouth, and dryness is one of the factors leading to bad breath.

I am using the following toothpastes which are SLS-free:

  • Elmex toothpaste for children (for my daughter)
  • Sensodyne

Troublesome SLS soaps

Have you ever wondered why your skin is dry, why you have dandruff, split and fuzzy hair, why you have to wash your hair so often? Have you wondered why your skin is itchy after a bath? Well… here’s the answer: chemicals which dissolve not only dirt but also the natural protective oils on your skin leaving it dry and vulnerable – the so called SLS soaps.
Be very careful of them, best avoid them completely as dry and itchy skin is not all they can be blamed for.

They also denaturate skin proteins causing irritation and making it prone to environmental contamination as because of the lack of the protective barrier they have better access to the more delicate level of your skin. What’s more SLS soaps if contaminated by dioxane can become carcinogenic.

They do not get rinsed away completely from our skin, when you apply them on your skin they get absorbed into our body! This definitely is not good because they cannot be metabolised by our liver and what’s more they can imitate a female hormone Oestrogen which may result in many health problems such as PMS, menopausal symptoms or breast cancer.

Unfortunately it’s extremely hard to avoid SLS soaps. I’ve checked all the cosmetics in my bathroom and I found it in almost every single product! They are in shampoos, soaps, toothpastes, mouth washes, bubble baths, body washes, even in products for children!? They can also be found in washing-up liquids, laundry detergents and many many more. Generally in anything that foams. What’s even worse is that they can exist under over 100 different names. A list of the most common is given below:

Sodium Lauryl/Laureth Sulfate (SLS)
Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulfate (SLES)
Ammonium Lauryl/Laureth Sulfate (ALS)
Sodium Myreth Sulfate
Sodium Methyl Cocoyl Taurate
Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate
Sodium Cocoyl Sarcosinate
Poassium Coco Hydrolysed Collagen
TEA (Triethanolamine) Lauryl/Laureth Sulfate
Disodium Oleamide Sulfosuccinate
Disodium Laureth Sulfosuccinate

Why are they used so commonly? Because they’re cheap! As simple as that. The same detergents are used to clean car engines for instance. But they are common also because we ask for them ourselves! Yes, that’s right, we vote for them every time we choose them from the shelves in a supermarket.
It is a challenge to find products without SLS, and they are usually more expensive. However it’s worth our effort. Next time you buy your shampoo think twice. Do you really want to PAY for harming your health?

At the moment I am using a few products that do not contain SLS soaps and are great!:

Collagen Face Wash

  • Collagen Face Washing Gel (Colway) – amazingly gentle, but works great also as a make-up remover (even waterproof) more info
  • Elave shampoo – all Elave products are free from toxic and irritant chemicals, deffinitely worth checking, they have a whole range of products for babies: more info
  • Dead Sea SPA Magik bath salt: more info
  • Dead Sea Natural Mineral Shower Cream (Malki): more info
